This section provides information on how to save money on those smaller ‘less important’ insurance policies.
These insurance policies can cost a large amount of money, as it is often tempting to buy the insurance package offered to you when you are you buying your bicycle or mobile phone . However these insurance policies are usually vastly inflated, and large savings can be made by taking out a separate policy.
Mobile Phones
Your network’s insurance policy is likely to be vastly inflated, with prices usually starting around £70 a year. Instead choose an independent stand alone insurance company normally charges about half:
There is a government run scheme, National Mobile Phone Register, which enables users to register their phone for free by logging on to immobilise.com . The site permits users to put a ban on their mobile phone being used if the handset is lost or stolen. All mobile phone networks are covered. If your phone is lost or stolen, you simply log on to your account at immobilise.com and the phone will be marked 'invalid' across all networks.

Bicycle
Bicycle insurance can be really expensive form of insurance because of the high chance of theft. If you are happy to ride a cheap second hand bike , investing in a good padlock and chain may be more beneficial than having to pay an expensive insurance policy.
If you have an expensive bike and do want insurance, Cycleguard.co.uk may be able to provide extra and more specific policies. Just be careful not to pay over the odds because of the insurance companies' 'expertise' status.
If you buy your bike with a credit card with purchase protection, you may be able to claim for another bike should it get stolen within a short period of time after purchase. All you need is an official crime number from the police to claim another bike – check with your credit card company for more details.

Dental
Private dental care is becoming more prominent as NHS waiting times become longer. The decision to take out private insurance is a personal decision and there is no right or wrong answer. Under the NHS everyone is entitled to free treatment, but it is increasingly hard to find a dentist willing to take on new patients.
The system for financing dental treatment varies according to where you live:
- England & Wales: Tri-band system – patients must pay at least one tier
- Scotland: Dental examinations are free with patients having to pay 80% of their treatment, to a max of £384
- Northern Ireland: Patients must pay for their initial exam and again up to 80% of their treatment
Free dental care is available to everyone under the age of 18, students in full time education aged 19 and under and other special groups (e.g. pregnant, low income).
There are wide variations in the number of dental schemes available and the protection they offer. For simple dental insurance schemes there is no need for a dental inspection prior to getting cover, with policies covering treatment, injuries and emergency work but not cosmetic dentistry. The only comprehensive site for finding the cheapest dental insurance is moneysupermarket.com although Bupa, Tesco, Denplan, CIGNA and WPA are not included in the search.
