For birthdays and engagements find pictures of good times gone past or little bits and peices that remind you of the people - if it's a wedding anniversary it could be thiings from the wedding day, some confetti, a flower from the bouquets anything.  Place it in a small cardboard box and decorate it with colour card, glitter and stick on shapes (these can be bought very cheaply in craft shops or ebay) and you have a lovely personalised gift that no-one else will have got them and that shows them how much thought you've put into it! "There are various ways I have saved money since buying my first property in February last year - mostly household related. By simple things like switching appliances off at the wall instead of leaving on standby and not overfilling the kettle - I'll only put enough water in for a few cups myself - I have been able to dramatically reduce electricity bills from the approx £47, to a much more manageable £12! Yes, simple things like this does work! I also use a financial adviser to get the best price available for all products needed for the run and upkeep of having mortgages and such. I had started walking to work and avoiding the £40 per month bus fare so using this, I am now able to eat out more often and treat my mum when in a cafe or on similar occasions. On a non-household note, I find on-line paid survey sites useful in gaining 'free cash' too. Sites such as Lightspeed Surveys, ValuedOpinions, and Pinecone have paid points which can be exchanged for paypal/gifts, so this has helped on occasions and gifts, saving the money I have on basic necessities for daily living (not like on minimum wage can I apply for expenses to be paid like others on the news! )  Also through these types of sites, you may also get to product test various items which don't have to be returned, and who is going to turn their nose up at freebies? Nothing much better than getting something for nothing."

However, on breaking the conditions, all that happens is you revert back to the lower interest account. Everyone may as well change to the higher interest account and earn the 3% until you need to break the conditions - at which point you just end up where you would have been all along, only with a few extra pounds the following interest payment :)"

"Cashback credit cards are a form of reward scheme, yet rather than giving points or bonuses, you get cold hard cash, tax-free, every time you spend on the card. And as cash is totally flexible - you can spend it on anything - and easy to compare, for almost everyone it comes up trumps.  Yet before beginning, it's important to follow....  THE GOLDEN RULE  Always set up a direct debit to pay the card off in full each month, so you'll never pay interest, otherwise that more than wipes out any gain.  The reason card companies offer cashback or any reward scheme is simple, they want to encourage you to spend on the card so they can earn interest from it. The interest cost of all cashback cards dwarves the cashback you'll earn.  Therefore before applying for a cashback card answer these two questions...  Are you sometimes unable to repay cards in full? If you can't repay in full every month, instead focus on a card with a lower interest rate instead.  Do you have existing credit card debts? Here you'll save more money by keeping them cheap, than going for cashback. And as applying for any financial product has a minor credit score impact (see the Credit Rating guide), ensure they're sorted out before applying for a cashback card.  The best way to pay off in full each month is via a Direct Debit, which unlike a standing order, allows the card company to take a variable amount each month to correspond with what you owe it (see the Direct Debit guide for more).  Sadly a few card providers deliberately miss the 'pay off in full' option off their Direct Debit forms, as it means they'll make less money; if that happens just write in ‘pay off in full' and send it in. The rules mean they should honour it, though do call up after a week or so and check it's in place.  Once this is done, your credit card has effectively become a Debit card, yet one that pays you every time you spend on it. While they don't like it, credit card companies don't lose money as they charge retailers every time someone uses one of their cards. In many ways using this technique, you're effectively claiming much of that retailer's fee for yourself.  Credit card companies throw serious cash at marketing in order to get their cards in our pockets. For those who don't need to borrow it's possible to ride this wave of freebies to be quids in. There are two other ways to make money from credit cards.  Stoozing. This is an advanced technique where you can make serious cash. It takes advantage of the fact that many credit cards will lend you money for a short time at 0% interest. If you take that money and save it in a high interest account you'll be quids in.  Credit Card Freebies. Many credit cards offer incentives like free flights or electronic goods for you to sign up to the card. Therefore if you've a good credit score, just take advantage by signing up even if you don't want the card.  Over the last few years, the number of cards offering cashback deals to new cardholders has diminished rapidly, yet it's still possible to get a serious whack. The benchmark rate is 0.5% cashback (50p per £100 spent); any card paying more is a good contender. Which card wins depends on how much you spend on it and its acceptibility.....   Halifax/Bank of Scotland (Mastercard). Pays 1% cashback on groceries/fuel, 0.5% on everything else.  The best non-Amex cards are from Halifax and Bank of Scotland. You earn 1% on all spending on groceries and fuel, and 0.5% on any other purchases, up to a maximum of £150 per year. The cashback can only be claimed in £15 increments.   Purchases which qualify for the higher 1% have to be from specified retailers. These are... Groceries: Asda, Morrisons, Tesco, Sainsburys, Waitrose, Aldi, Lidl, Iceland, Somerfield & more. Petrol: BP, Esso, Shell, Texaco, Q8, Murco, Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, Waitrose & more.  Quick Stats: Cashback Rate. 1% on groceries/petrol. 0.5% other purchases Standard Rate: 15.9% APR Min. Salary Requirement: NONE Maximum cashback/year: £150  Slightly more complex is Barclaycard's OnePulse card, which pays 0.5%, up to a maximum of £15 a month (i.e. £3,000 monthly spend). This is guaranteed to be the cashback rate until June 2010. On top, you earn 5% cashback on all spending with Transport for London (the London tube and underground), again capped at £15 a month (12.4% APR). To get this, you need to have a good credit rating, be over 21, and earn at least £20,000 pa.  Once you set up a credit card, every time you use it you get paid. While this isn't an excuse to 'spend more' it does mean from now on...  Use the cashback for ALL normal spending, replacing cash, cheques, and other debit, credit & charge cards.  For those who have work expenses they need to reclaim, this can be a powerful way to earn more, at no cost to you, provided you can cope with paying the bill in full each month.   Yet do beware of setting up regular payments from it, or any other credit card, thoug"

"Hi, I work in a busy office and I hear the girls all trying to compete with each other over kids birthday parties!  When my son was 6 I was a single parent with very little cash but didnt want to let him down by not having a party.  As a theme I made it a box party, all the kids had to bring a cardboard box, as a way of entertaining them I had glittern glue and all sorts of stuff to decorate their boxes it kept them quiet for hours, then we played games with the boxes and the got to take home their decorated box at the end!! A cheap and cheerful gift instead of expensive party bags.  One of the mums told me 2 weeks on her wee boy was still playing in his box! We were a big hit and it hardly cost us a thing. "Since being made redundent in February, I have learned the true value of the pound. I dont just spend pennies now let alone pounds then think about it later.  If I have a £10 note that I havent accounted for then rather than waisting it, it gets put away for emergency's. I wrote down the amount of evey household bill that gets paid monthly, then debts and then others (i.e school dinners, petrol etc). Then I accounted for every penny that came into the house. I could not believe the amount I was spending on rubbish.  Using this system I am now able to track evey penny and have even now looked at a way of paying debts off with money that would normally be squandered. "For my parents silver wedding anniversary myself and siblings spent next to nothing by buying a cheap photo album and filling it with family photographs. Beginning with photo's of their wedding then leading onto photo's of us three kids then their 3 grandkids. We also left space at the back so that it can continue to be added too.  My parents were absolutely thrilled with it and it cost barely anything, except from time and some effort.  The best part was the time we spent as a family when we were looking through it together and laughing as we reminisced over the photographs and old memories.  I'd highly recommend doing this to anyone.  It was priceless. "

"I have to say I am a complete bargain hunter and I can honestly say that I save an absolute fortune by purchasing clothing for myself and daughter on e-bay.  A perfect example of one great bargain was a branded jacket my daughter (who is now 12 and is getting an eye for deisgner brands) was begging me to get her for ages.  I couldn't afford to buy her one from the shops as it was retailing at £50.  I found the same jacket on e-bay, brand new tags for £22 inclusive of postage.  So not only was I £28 better off, I didnt have to leave the house and my daughter was delighted on her birthday.  Ebay really does save me a huge amount of cash compared to purchasing clothing on the high street.  I would highly recommend it to anyone. "

Store nail polishes and eye creams in the fridge. For broken lipsticks - gently melt the ends and stick together, place in fridge to reset. Add a blob of liquid foundation to your regular face cream to create tinted moisturiser. Blemish - crush a dissolving aspirin with a little water to form a paste.Apply to spot to reduce swelling/reddness and kill infection. Caught without makeup. Use vaseline to shine lips, gloss eyelids and define eyelashes (and moisturise). Also use excess on fingertips to smooth split ends."

I would also tell myself to not spend money on anything i don't need. When it is coming up to the holiday i smash the jar and see what i have saved. The great thing about the jar is that you have to smash it to get the money out meaning there is no way to dip into it. These tip s have worked for me and i am a broke student."

"Instead of having a whole load of family (usually that you haven't seen for ages) and friends to a full daytime receptions with expensive meals and champagne, why not have just immediate family for an intimate special meal.    Later on in the day have a big wedding party in a venue with the rest of  your family and friends, serving a quality buffet and good quality cava instead of champagne.   Most people actually don't like attending the whole day at a wedding due to the exhuberant costs of getting wedding outfits and flowers etc."

"You know how people have wedding lists? Well instead of having a list in your usual places like John Lewis and Debenhams, instead your guests donate a part of the wedding. So instead of getting you a toaster someone will get your invitations, another can get the favours, another (or a couple of guests) could get the bride's dress etc. You could set up a website in the same way as a gift list but it can be more personalised.  This would suit a couple who already live together and have already made a home together."

"www.travelzoo.com  Sign up for their weekly top 20.  Excellent holidays for a fraction of the price on offer.  Just as long as you don't mind where you go."

"Be on the lookout in your local theatre for your local amateur dramatic clubs production's. These are usually of a very high standard but at the fraction of the Price compared to professional.  For example Eastwood Park Theatre in the South Side of Glasgow's amateur thatre season runs from end of feb-apr. See a top notch show for peanuts while supporting your local theatre group! Every1's a winner :o)"

"Queens Park Glashouse allows you to book animal handling sessions in the reptile house for free so we booked for a group of my sons friends to go on his 3rd birthday then we are having a picknick in the play area afterwords which is also free of charge, rather than paying a fortune for a kids party in a soft play or something but equally as fun for kiddies!"

"Take out a Thomas Cook credit card, use it for purchases, get pounds for spending pounds then use your pounds to buy your summer holiday with T.C. and at the same time, save on credit card charges. You could save about £200 on your holiday, evan better if your other half has a T.C. credit card aswell."

"I got paid off last year and had to find a way in saving money.  I started a shopping list so that we I went into big super-markets I knew what I was needed, rather than picking up the offers.  I found that cutting out on the extras I saved a fortune.  About £400 in 2 months."

"Hi there, I know that this may not be a huge money saving idea, bt as I am on a tight budget looking after my disabled husband and with 2 teenage daughters(wanting everything in sight every weekend), I Whites and coloureds) and with only having my machine on every 2nd day I am saving £5 per week (£20 monthly) which I can now put towards other things like taking the girls to the cinema(and also bying the sweets, juice etc from Asda before we go to save more money HaHa) and it is a wee treat which I can now do every month and it's great. Thank you. Margaret"

"When going to the cinema stock up on snacks and drinks from the supermarket or a newsagents first. You can still give yourself a nice treat at a fraction of the price. Saves a fortune especially if you have kids!"

"i usually make up hampers for family and friends, collecting goodies (bargains) i find throughout the year and theme each hamper around the specific person. My daughter loved her high school musical hamper and it only cost £10 including the basket itself...and was full of lovely bits and bobs."

"When you are buying furniture, always ask if the store has any promotions that week.  Make sure you know the assistant knows that you are keen to buy and are shopping around for best prices.  They always have about 20-30% discount to play with.  I recently saved £80 as the assistant gave me 20% off when totalling it all up.  She was also able to give me free delivery.  I think that stores have that little bit of leeway which you dont get if you are ordering on line. My mobile no is 07742802901 as I am at work this week."

"When my family and I went on holiday to Lanzarote last year, we saved over £60 by not taking the package transfers from the airport to the hotel.  That saving included car hire for a week.  It was cheaper to hire a car for the week and the cost of petrol than to pay for 4 transfers from the airport.  Well worth it as we got to see parts of the island we would not have seen with just the transfers.  It also meant that we saved more money by taking the car to the waterpark instead of taxis."

"Having little ones can be expensive, especially trying to keep them amuzed over the weekend and holidays. My top tip is take them to the cinema, usually this costs well over twenty pound however each cinema runs a kids club usually on just before lunch time, each child costs £2.50 to go in and best of all adults all go free, coupled with some sweets from the local supermarket on offer instead of the cinemas own food...a great outing for you and your little one for 5 pound"

"Going to the cinema when you have a few kids can be expensive so why not make your own cinema evening at home? Get the kids to design tickets and be ushers, choose a DVD to watch and microwave popcorn, buy tickets from the kids and have them show you to your seats, switch off phones and lights and enoy the experience for a fraction of the cost."

"When I was pregnant I saved up for my baby stuff by taking a packed lunch to work each day, I also wrote a daily budget plan beside my to do list each day and the most effective thing I did was stopped paying for goods by card in shops and made sure I always used cash then put my change in an envelope marked new baby each day.  All of these things together definately helped me to afford all the things I needed for my little guy."

"To save money for going on a great summer holiday at the end of a hard year of work and university I used the money I had to invest in a gym membership. This made sure that I spent the spare time I had at the gym and going swimming; saving me from going to the shops at the weekends and at times where I needed my spirits lifted. Instead I would go and run or swim for an hour or two. Not only did I avoid buying expensive clothes etc. but felt good about myself and feel much fitter, especially in time for my sunshine beach holiday. I would advise everyone to do the same!! "

"Well l love chinese food and sometimes id get a takeaway twice a week. so l'd heard that if you work for a chinese takeaway delivering meals you get a free meal at the end of each shift. so l went down to my local and offered my services at the weekends and luckley they were looking for someone. not only do l now save the money each week on my chinese fix i make around £120 a weekend delivering for them. i know the weekends are important to all of us but the GB experience is on when l deliver and its fab l look forward to it each week and driving around with the bowie boy blasting in the car is a buzz."

"I was paid off from my job at the end of February but had already booked my holiday for June.  What I have been doing is checking the euro rate every day and when it goes up I have been getting some money changed instead of waiting until the week before I go and then the rate might not be as good.  I have managed to get quite a few good deals over the last couple of months. As I am presently on jobseekers allowance, this has been a good way to save for spending money. "
